Cleaning and Care of Fine Jewellery

Regular care, cleaning & inspection of fine jewellery will keep it in top condition and protect it for many years. Here are some important tips to keep in mind;

    Diamonds of Detroit - Taking Care of Fine jewellery
  1. Storage - Separate jewellery in different compartments in your jewellery box when it is not being worn. Gems, improperly stored, can damage each other. Diamonds can scratch other gems, such as rubies, sapphires or emeralds. Cultured pearls need special attention as they are very soft. They should be polished with a soft cloth before storing, and kept in a special chamois pouch for safe keeping.

  2. Wear - Rings which are worn regularly need periodic cleaning to remove the film caused by soap, skin oil & cosmetics. Diamonds literally collect oils in dish water. We recommend removing rings before doing routine household chores. Also, put your jewellery on last, after make-up & hair sprays as this can affect the look as well. However, regular cleaning, either at home, or by ultrasonic at the store will keep them looking great.

  3. Soap & Water - A mild soap & water solution with a soft brush is effective for many home jewellery care needs. We have our very own commercial jewel cleaner, available in our store. Some gemstones, though, will be damaged if cleaned this way - those gemstones include; Emerald, jade, opal, pearl, turquoise.

  4. Professional Cleaning - At Diamonds of Detroit, we recommend that twice a year you come in to have your rings inspected and professionally cleaned by us. We have the knowledge and ability to help you keep your fine jewellery in prime condition, so you can enjoy wearing your jewellery longer.

  5. Have Your Jewellery Appraised - We are happy to offer jewellery appraisal service. Your best protection for your fine jewellery in the event of loss, theft or damage is to have an expert appraisal. An appraisal is the best way to ensure that it is replaced as closely as possible to what you had. Your written appraisal will contain a complete description of your jewellery quality, design & appearance, as well as the value of your piece of jewellery.
